What future for our Children?

What a joy it was to see so many children processing from St Mary’s with their lanterns, eagerly anticipating the switching on of the lights! Joyful but heartrending. It breaks my heart to think of the abused and polluted planet we older generations are passing on to them.

Net Zero by 2050 is the legally binding target that we have vanishing prospects of hitting. And Net Zero is not the end of the race; it is the Beginning. It is the beginning of the race our children and grandchildren will have to run to get the trillions of tons of carbon out of the atmosphere and slowly, over centuries, reduce the colossal heat in the oceans that is driving extreme weather events.

Those events will, of course, be getting increasingly catastrophic as long as we continue to drill for oil and pump carbon into the atmosphere. Every postponed action is making their task harder.

So as parents and grandparents wondering what Christmas present you might buy for your children, taking action that will increase the chances of Earth being a planet on which they can survive and thrive would be the best present of all.

Putting myself forward as the Green Party candidate in Uttlesford is my best Christmas present to my children and grandchildren. I hope they will remember me kindly for it.
